The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Hon. Faiyaz Koya yesterday received the new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, H.E His Excellency Zhang Ping.
In welcoming Ambassador Zhang to Fiji, the Minister commended the growth of the Fiji-China relations. He pointed to China’s position as a tourism market that the Fijian Government intends to capitalise on. He also highlighted that the opening of a new Fijian Trade Commission in Shanghai last year, would stimulate trade between the two countries. In the past six years, visitor arrivals from China have grown from 4,000 to 28,000.
Ambassador Zhang expressed his appreciation to Minister Koya for meeting with him and discussing ways to strengthen bilateral relations with China. He said there will be a number of trade and investment related visits this year and this would provide an opportunity to further enhance trade relations. This also includes the proposed Free Trade Agreement negotiations between Fiji and China.
Furthermore, China will look at continuing technical assistance and the provision of experts in the areas of textile, clothing and footwear and also health to name a few.
Ambassador Zhang is China’s newest envoy to Fiji. Earlier this week he met with the Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama.
