The Pacific African Caribbean Pacific (PACP) region has been subjected to a broad-brush and generalised approach by the European Commission (EC), says Ministry of Industry and Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali.
He said there was very little attempt on the part of the commission to understand the region's uniqueness, challenges, smallness and vulnerability.
"Instead, Pacific ACP has been treated similar to any other advanced negotiating partner of the EC," said Mr Ali in his address at the PACP trade and fisheries officials meeting yesterday.
He said the onus was on senior trade and fisheries officials to discuss and recommend a negotiating strategy to their ministers and leaders.
He added they hoped to conclude the meeting with an agreement on an EPA that had lasting developmental impact on PACP countries.
"We have arrived at a crucial stage of the comprehensive economic partnership agreement negotiations with the EU."
