9th June - International Archives Day

The International Council on Archives has earmarked 9th June as the International Day on Archives around the Globe.

The National Archives of Fiji, in its bid to promote its statutory functions and services took the day to promote to the public through exhibitions and media awareness the rich and unique records it holds.

The day long activities promoting the International Day attracted a lot of attention from the public and media who were fascinated by the “black & white” photograph gallery and the exhibitions of documented records that are held by at the Archives.

In addition to these exhibits, the staff of the Archives also put up a display to highlight the work carried out by the different section within the Department.
According to the International Council on Archives (ICA), the main purpose of International Archives Day, is to:
•    Raise awareness among the public of the importance of records and archives, in order to make it understood that records and archives provide the foundation for their rights and identity;
•    Raise the awareness of senior decision makers of the benefits of records management for good governance and development;
•    Raise the public, private and public sectors' awareness of the necessity of preserving archives for the long-term, and of providing access to them;
