World Literacy Day In The West

WORLD LITERACY DAY IN THE WEST

The National Archives of Fiji was part of the “World Literacy Day” program that was held at the Western Regional Library, Lautoka on 8 - 9th September, 2011.

The Department took the opportunity to put up a Photograph Gallery for the public in the Western Division. The exhibition of mostly black & white photographs of Fiji from the former Public Relations Office and the Ministry of Information Photography Unit was a big hit for most of the public including school students.

The Archives Team was led by the Director, Mr Misiwaini Qereqeretabua who also combined the photographs with some historical records of Fiji. One of the most popular record on display which attracted a lot of attention from the public and the media was the Fijian version of the “Instruments of Cession of the Fiji Islands”. The document was discovered by a consultant who was working for the Department of Culture in 2004 on a framed photograph at the Provincial Administrator Lomaiviti’s Office in Levuka.

The World Literacy Day Celebrations in the West was opened by the Divisional Education Officer Western, Mr Voravora who talked about the importance of books and records in our lives as a tool for promoting literacy.
